HURON, S.D. – The Spearfish Spartans Volleyball Team opened their season on the road Saturday, August 30, competing in the Huron Invitational. The Spartans faced a strong field of teams and came away with two wins and two losses to begin their 2025 campaign.
Spearfish began the day against Dell Rapids, where they struggled to find rhythm offensively and dropped the match in two sets.
The Spartans bounced back in their second match with a strong performance against Brookings, winning in straight sets (2-0). Balanced attacking and steady serving runs helped Spearfish secure their first victory of the season.
In their third match, Spearfish battled Watertown in a competitive three-set contest. The Spartans showed grit but ultimately fell 2-1 in a tight finish.
The day closed with a thrilling matchup against tournament host Huron, where Spearfish prevailed in three sets. The Spartans capitalized on big rallies late in the match to finish with a win and even their record.
Head Coach Shelbie Richards said the tournament provided valuable early-season experience, giving the team confidence against both Class AA and Class A programs.
With a 2-2 start, the Spartans will now prepare for their home opener on Tuesday, September 2, when they host Hill City at the Spearfish High School gym.
