SPEARFISH, S.D. (Odrix Sports) — The Spearfish Spartans boys basketball team battled until the final buzzer but came up just short in a 50-46 loss to Brandon Valley in a tightly contested matchup.
Senior Bennett Kortan delivered a standout all-around performance to lead Spearfish, finishing with 19 points, four rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Kortan’s energy on both ends of the floor kept the Spartans within striking distance throughout the game.
Mason Southern provided key support with 11 points and three assists, helping stabilize the offense during crucial stretches. Cooper Gibbs contributed eight points and six rebounds, anchoring the Spartans inside and controlling the glass. Karsen Seyer added five points, while Kamren Davis chipped in two points, two rebounds, and two steals in a defensive effort that helped slow Brandon Valley’s attack at times.
Despite the balanced contributions, Spearfish was unable to overcome Brandon Valley’s late execution. The Lynx were led by Lincoln McInerney’s 17 points, while Ayuel Deng added 10 points to help seal the victory.
The Spartans showed resilience and defensive intensity throughout the contest, repeatedly closing gaps and creating opportunities, but Brandon Valley’s timely scoring proved to be the difference in the closing minutes.
Spearfish will look to build on the competitive performance as the team continues its push toward the postseason, aiming to turn close contests into victories down the stretch.
