SPEARFISH, S.D. — The Spearfish Spartans boys basketball team overwhelmed I-90 rival Sturgis Brown on Tuesday night, rolling to a 60–31 victory at Spearfish High School.
The Scoopers struck first, jumping out to an early lead and closing the opening quarter ahead 12–7. From there, the Spartans found their rhythm and completely seized control. Spearfish erupted for a 22–0 run that spanned the entire second quarter and stretched into the opening minutes of the third, turning a five-point deficit into a commanding advantage.
Senior Kamren Davis and junior Kade Vavruska fueled the surge. Davis led all scorers with 21 points and added five rebounds, while Vavruska poured in 15 points and grabbed three boards. The duo did much of its damage in the late third and early fourth quarters as the Spartans continued to pull away.
Spearfish’s defense set the tone during the decisive stretch, holding Sturgis scoreless for an extended period and converting stops into transition opportunities. Mason Southern orchestrated the offense with six assists to go with nine rebounds, and Bennett Kortan added six points and five assists in a balanced team effort.
By the fourth quarter, the Spartans had built an insurmountable lead and closed out the rivalry matchup in convincing fashion.
