SPEARFISH, S.D. — Despite a late surge in the fourth quarter, the Spearfish Spartans girls basketball team (7–5) fell 45–34 to the Huron Tigers (8–7) at home on Friday, February 6.

The Spartans were unable to overcome 11 turnovers in the second half but displayed enough firepower to keep the contest competitive into the closing minutes.

Spearfish was led by senior guard Kate Scharf, who finished with 8 points, six rebounds, and one steal. Senior Adelyn Bouman also contributed 8 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists. Junior guard Anna Eisenbarth added 6 points and one rebound, while seniors Kali Reiners and Tiersyn Grubb chipped in six and five points, respectively.

Huron opened the game on a 4–0 run, but Spearfish quickly responded with a 10–3 stretch fueled by baskets from Grubb and Scharf and a pair of three-pointers from Eisenbarth. The Spartans held a 10–7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Huron answered with a 5–0 run before Reiners connected on her first of two three-pointers on the night. Trailing by one, Grubb secured a rebound and found Scharf for a three, which was followed by another long-range bucket from Bouman. Spearfish carried a 21–15 advantage into halftime.

The third quarter proved to be the turning point. Turnovers and cold shooting plagued the Spartans, allowing the Tigers to outscore Spearfish 17–7 in the period and seize control of the game.

Down 11 with less than a minute remaining, the Spartans received late three-pointers from Reiners and Bouman, but Huron converted its free throws to close out the victory.

Spearfish finished 11-of-40 from the field, including 8-of-23 from beyond the arc.
