SPEARFISH, S.D. — Bauer’s passion for performance extended far beyond Spearfish. At Black Hills State University, he majored in theatre and participated in 18 productions, earning critical acclaim for his direction of The Miracle Worker, which received standing ovations.

After college, Bauer’s career expanded into professional theater and film in Houston, Texas, where he signed with a talent agency. Over the years, his portfolio grew to include eight professional stage productions, 17 commercials, 10 industrial and safety films, 10 English-language voiceovers for Japanese anime, and 24 independent films, several of which earned awards — including Bindlestiffs, winner of the Audience Favorite Award at the Slamdance Film Festival.

Bauer also made his mark on the regional stage, performing in the original cast of The Phantom of the Matthews Opera House by Hall of Famer Paul Higbee, and later portraying memorable roles in the Black Hills Passion Play, including Disciple James, Longinus, and Selpha.

A Lasting Impact on the Arts

Even after decades in the industry, Bauer remained deeply connected to his roots. He returned to the Matthews Opera House for the acclaimed one-man show A One-Sided Conversation with Casey Stengel, also written by Paul Higbee. After moving back to the Black Hills in 2016, he continued performing at Homestake Opera House, Black Hills Community Theatre, and the Rose Hill Cemetery Walk. His legacy as an actor, director, and storyteller continues to inspire both peers and students alike.

Kurt Bauer passed away in March 2023, leaving behind a legacy of creativity, humor, and artistic excellence. His induction into the Spearfish High School Fine Arts Hall of Fame stands as a testament to a life devoted to the performing arts and to the community that first helped him shine.

Bauer will be officially inducted during the Spearfish High School Fall Choir Concert on Monday, October 20, at the Spearfish High School Auditorium.

A separate ceremony and article will honor fellow inductee Michael Knutson at a later date.
