Spartans Fall to Camels in Five-Set Thriller

Deck: Addie Keller posts 17 points and Finley Bouman hits .281 as the Spartans win the point battle 106-96 but drop the fifth set to Campbell County.

SPEARFISH, S.D. — The Spearfish Spartans won more points, more kills and two of the most lopsided sets of the night, but the Campbell County Camels won the one set that mattered most. Campbell County edged Spearfish 3-2 on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at Spearfish High School, taking the deciding fifth set 15-11.

The set scores were 25-21, 23-25, 25-10, 22-25 and 11-15. Spearfish outscored the visitors 106-96 over the match’s 1 hour, 56 minutes, yet slipped to 10-14 on the season.

How the Match Unfolded, Set by Set

The match came down to efficiency at the net. In the two sets Spearfish won, the Spartans hit .385 and .444. In the three sets they lost, their hitting percentage never climbed above .143.

Set 1: Spearfish 25, Campbell County 21

Spearfish opened clean, piling up 12 kills against just 2 attack errors on 26 swings for a .385 hitting percentage. The Spartans led the match 1-0.

Set 2: Campbell County 25, Spearfish 23

The Camels evened the match as the Spartans’ offense sputtered. Spearfish still produced 11 kills, but 8 attack errors on 33 attempts dropped the team to .091 in a two-point loss.

Set 3: Spearfish 25, Campbell County 10

The third set was Spearfish’s most dominant stretch of the night. The Spartans hammered 15 kills with only 3 errors on 27 attempts, a .444 clip, and held Campbell County to 10 points to retake a 2-1 lead.

Set 4: Campbell County 25, Spearfish 22

With a chance to close out the match, Spearfish swung more than in any other set (38 attempts) but converted just 8 kills against 6 errors. The resulting .053 hitting percentage let Campbell County force a fifth set.

Set 5: Campbell County 15, Spearfish 11

In the race to 15, Spearfish managed 4 kills and 2 errors on 14 attempts (.143). Campbell County pulled away late to take the set and the match.

Spartan Standouts

Addie Keller led Spearfish with 17 points. The outside hitter recorded a team-high 12 kills on 30 attempts (.200) and anchored the front row with 4 solo blocks and 1 block assist, adding 7 digs.

Finley Bouman was the Spartans’ most efficient high-volume attacker. The middle blocker finished with 11 kills and only 2 errors on 32 swings for a .281 hitting percentage. She also served an ace, recorded 10 digs and handled 14 serve-receive attempts for 13 points.

Julia Billington did a little of everything. The outside hitter totaled 10 kills, 2 aces and a solo block for 13 points, and her 17 digs led all Spartans. She also took on the heaviest passing load on the floor with 38 serve-receive attempts.

Taylor Burry did not commit an attack error. The middle blocker went 6-for-10 with zero errors, a .600 hitting percentage, and added 4 block assists and 6 digs for 10 points.

Megan Markovetz ran the offense with 25 assists and contributed 7 digs, while fellow setter Piper Jacobs added 17 assists, 3 digs and an ace.

Coming off the bench, Millie Adams chipped in 4 kills, 2 solo blocks and 3 block assists for 9 points. Layla Meredith added 6 kills and 2 solo blocks for 8 points. Libero Emma Dahl served 2 aces and dug 8 balls from the back row.

By the Numbers

Spearfish’s block was a strength all night, but 21 attack errors and 11 service errors gave Campbell County free points in a match decided by small margins.
