SPEARFISH — Addie Keller recorded 12 kills and seven aces Tuesday as the Spearfish Spartans volleyball team rallied from an early hole to beat the Belle Fourche Broncs 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 25-20).
Spearfish (10-13) piled up 14 aces and 68 digs in the 1-hour, 49-minute match. Julia Billington led the Spartans with 13 kills and added 10 digs, while Keller finished with a team-high 19 points.
Belle Fourche opened the first set on a 5-0 run, scoring on a kill and a block before four straight Spartans errors. Finley Bouman and Billington got Spearfish on the board with a block, and Keller followed with an ace. Bouman later added an ace and Billington a kill during a 3-0 Spartans run.
Trailing by three, Spearfish tied the set on a Keller kill, a Bouman block and a Broncs error. Millie Adams then delivered a kill to give the Spartans their first lead. A Bouman kill pushed the advantage to three, and with the set tied at 22, Layla Meredith and Keller each put down kills around a Belle Fourche error to close it out 25-22.
The second set swung back and forth. Kills from Keller and Billington put Spearfish up 4-2, but the Broncs built a four-point lead before the Spartans answered. Bouman and Billington combined for three kills to tie it at 13, and Spearfish later went ahead 17-15.
Belle Fourche responded, finding open spots with high, arcing shots and capitalizing on Spartans errors to take a 23-19 lead. Keller hit three kills in a late push, but the Broncs closed out the set 25-22 to even the match.
Keller set the tone early in the third set with back-to-back aces after a Meredith shot found the floor, giving Spearfish a 3-1 lead. The Broncs tied it at 4, but kills from Bouman and Keller helped stretch the lead to 10-6. Adams added two kills late, and a Bouman kill made it 22-14.
Belle Fourche answered with two 3-0 runs to pull within 24-22 before Bouman ended the set with a block.
Keller opened the fourth set with two kills during a 3-1 Spartans start, but the Broncs climbed back to lead by three. Billington sparked the response with a kill and an ace, and Spearfish took control after a tie at 9 with a kill from Adams, a Broncs error, a Bouman block and a Keller kill for a 13-9 lead.
Megan Markovetz added an ace, Bouman added another block and a Keller ace made it 18-14. Belle Fourche fought back to tie the set at 20, but a Markovetz trick shot put the Spartans back in front. Two Broncs errors and a Billington kill followed before Bouman sealed the match with an ace.
Bouman finished with seven kills, three aces, 11 digs and two blocks. Markovetz and Piper Jacobs each recorded 18 assists, with Markovetz adding three aces and 10 digs. Adams hit .250 with six kills, Taylor Burry added six kills on a .455 hitting percentage, and libero Emma Dahl contributed nine digs.
