Thomas Hughes added his second rushing touchdown on a 2-yard run before Spearfish turned to Owynn Meredith at quarterback. Meredith kept the scoring going with a 1-yard touchdown run.

The special teams unit followed with another score. Karsen Seyer broke loose for a 50-yard punt return touchdown, giving Spearfish its ninth touchdown of the opening half and helping send the Spartans into the locker room with a 59-0 advantage.
Spearfish continued to control the game defensively after halftime while working deeper into its roster.
Meredith eventually connected with Asher Olson for a 19-yard touchdown with 6:52 remaining, accounting for the Spartans’ final points of the night.
Douglas broke through for its lone touchdown in the second half, but Spearfish closed out the 66-7 victory.
The Spartans’ defense consistently created problems in the Douglas backfield. Ethan Foote finished with two tackles and a tackle for loss, while Moser recorded two tackles and two tackles for loss. Keller Vega, Brock Lewis, Liam Goetz and Drew Durdall also recorded tackles for loss.
Payton Jones finished with two tackles, while Seyer, Jack Scharf and Thomas Hughes were among the Spartans credited with tackles.

Special teams also played a significant role beyond Seyer’s touchdown. Vavruska recorded punt returns of 29, 46 and 23 yards, repeatedly giving the Spearfish offense favorable field position.
The victory marks Spearfish’s third consecutive win following a 26-20 season-opening loss at Watertown. The Spartans have responded with victories over Mitchell, Rapid City Stevens and Douglas to improve to 3-1.
Spearfish will return to the road Friday, Sept. 25, when the Spartans travel to Brookings to face the Bobcats.
