STURGIS, S.D. — The Spearfish Spartans boys soccer team continued its strong season Tuesday, using goals from three different players to roll past the Sturgis Scoopers, 5-0, on the road.
The victory improved Spearfish to 6-2-2 on the season, with Brooks Meyer and Evan Duncan each scoring twice and Caleb Verhulst adding another goal.
Spearfish broke through with 26:37 remaining in the first half when Verhulst found the back of the net to give the Spartans a 1-0 advantage.
The Spartans added to their lead late in the half. With 6:17 remaining, Meyer scored his first goal of the match, sending Spearfish into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
It did not take long for Meyer to strike again.
With 32:51 remaining in the second half, Meyer scored his second goal of the night to extend the Spartans’ advantage to 3-0.
Duncan took over the scoring from there.
The Spearfish senior found the net with 15:42 remaining to make it a four-goal advantage. Duncan then added his second goal with 6:59 left, putting the finishing touches on the 5-0 victory.
While the Spartans’ offense produced five goals, the Spearfish defense kept Sturgis off the scoreboard to secure the shutout.
Meyer and Duncan combined for four of Spearfish’s five goals, while Verhulst’s first-half score opened the scoring and helped the Spartans establish control on the road.
Spearfish will look to build on the victory Thursday, Sept. 17, when the Spartans take on Douglas/New Underwood.
