Late Spearfish Goal Not Enough as Spartans Fall to Pierre, 3-1

PIERRE, S.D. – The Spearfish Spartans girls soccer team battled until the end Saturday, but a late push wasn’t enough to overcome an early deficit in a 3-1 road loss to the Pierre Governors at the PILC Soccer Complex.

Pierre built a 2-0 advantage and held the Spartans off the scoreboard for much of the match.

Spearfish continued to battle, however, and finally broke through late in the second half.

With 16:16 remaining, Auna Taglioli found the back of the net to cut Pierre’s advantage in half at 2-1 and put the Spartans within a goal of tying the match.

The Governors responded before Spearfish could complete the comeback, adding another goal to extend their lead to 3-1.

That would stand as the final score as the Spartans came up short on the road.

Spearfish will return home Tuesday, Sept. 8, to take on the Belle Fourche Broncs at the Black Hills Power Sports Complex.
