SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Spearfish Spartans Girls Basketball team enters the new season coming off a memorable run that ended with a sixth-place finish at the State Tournament, marking one of the program’s strongest showings in recent years. But the journey ahead brings a new challenge, as the Spartans graduate major impact players in Mya Kochuten, Jozie Dana, and Avery Kirk, all of whom were pivotal offensive and defensive leaders.

Despite those key losses, Spearfish returns proven varsity talent and a foundation strong enough to keep the Spartans competitive in Class AA.

Returning Starters Lead the New Core

Two of last year’s starters—Kate Scharf and Adelyn Bouman—are back to anchor the lineup and take on even larger roles this season.

Kate Scharf showed scoring versatility with the ability to finish at the rim, knock down perimeter shots, and defend multiple positions. Her experience, efficiency, and floor presence will be central to the Spartans’ identity.

Adelyn Bouman returns as a steady, smart and physical contributor—bringing rebounding strength, interior defense, and consistency that will help stabilize a lineup adjusting to new scoring distribution.

Kali Reiners, who provided reliable minutes off the bench last season, is expected to elevate into an expanded role. Her toughness, defensive effort, and ability to stretch the floor give Spearfish another valuable returning piece.

Also returning is Tiersyn Grubb, who also provided quality time for the Spartans off the bench, being a key rebounder and defensive force when the team needed help in the paint.

The Spartans first matchup will take place at home against Belle Fourche on Friday, December 12. Varsity Tipoff starts at 6.
