Spearfish, SD — The Spearfish Spartans football team delivered a thrilling comeback in their first home game of the season, defeating the Rapid City Central Cobblers 14-6 on Friday night. The victory evens the Spartans’ record at 1-1.
Slow Start, Big Finish
The Cobblers controlled the pace through the first half and into much of the second, appearing poised to put the game away as they marched into Spartan territory early in the fourth quarter. But the Spartans defense came up with a critical stop, shifting momentum back to the home sideline.
Moments later, quarterback Thomas Hughes broke free for a spectacular 93-yard touchdown run that ignited the crowd and tied the game at 6 after the missed extra point.
Defense Holds Strong
The Spartans defense rose again on the next possession, forcing a quick three-and-out. With just under six minutes left, Spearfish’s offense took over and pieced together the drive of the night — a 10-play, 69-yard march that chewed up 4 minutes and 20 seconds.
Mick Bosh capped it off with a 3-yard touchdown run, and Hughes found Kade Vavruska on the two-point conversion to put Spearfish up 14-6. Vavruska also had a key 32-yard catch earlier in the drive that kept the series alive.
On Central’s final possession, Hughes sealed the win with his second interception of the night.
