With more than 60 players taking the field, the Spearfish Spartans officially opened fall football practices Monday, signaling the start of a new season with high expectations.

The Spartans are coming off a 6-4 campaign in 2024, a season that began with an impressive 3-0 start. Last year also marked the debut of head coach Tom Tieszen, who was named the Region 4 Football Coach of the Year after guiding the team to its winning record.

Monday’s opening session began with position-specific “indy” drills for both offense and defense, before transitioning into orchestrated team periods that ran through multiple plays on each side of the ball. The day also included time in the film room as players began breaking down schemes and preparing for the weeks ahead, including the team’s first matchup against Tea Area on the Road on August 29.

For now, the Spartans are in helmets, jerseys, and shorts, focusing on fundamentals and installation. Padded practices are set to begin next week as the team ramps up preparations for the upcoming season.
