SPEARFISH, S.D. — The Spearfish Spartans boys basketball team made a powerful first impression to open the season, cruising past the Belle Fourche Broncs 67–33 in a dominant performance that showcased depth, balance, and defensive intensity.
Spearfish set the tone early, jumping out to a quick lead behind relentless pressure on defense and efficient scoring on offense. The Spartans’ ability to share the basketball and attack from multiple spots made it difficult for Belle Fourche to keep pace, as Spearfish steadily widened the gap throughout the game.
Junior Kamren Davis led the way offensively, pouring in a game-high 18 points while knocking down seven three-pointers and playing nearly the entire game. Davis’ perimeter shooting stretched the defense and fueled several scoring runs that put the contest out of reach early.
Senior Kade Vavruska followed with a strong all-around effort, finishing with 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while also contributing on both ends of the floor. Bennett Kortan added 12 points, four steals, and four blocks, providing a major presence defensively and in transition.
Spearfish’s depth was evident throughout the night. Cooper Gibbs chipped in eight points, six rebounds, and two steals, while Mason Southern contributed five points, eight assists, and steady ball control. Ashar Hodgs added four points and four rebounds, and Thomas Hughes helped on the glass with six rebounds.
Defensively, the Spartans were locked in, forcing turnovers, contesting shots, and holding Belle Fourche to just 33 points. Spearfish recorded multiple steals and blocks as a team and controlled the boards, limiting second-chance opportunities for the Broncs.
With the convincing season-opening victory, the Spartans now turn their attention to a tougher stretch of competition. Spearfish will be back in action Friday, December 19, when they take on the Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles, before returning to the floor Saturday, December 20, 2025, against the Pierre T.F. Riggs Governors. Both matchups will provide an early test for the Spartans against strong Class AA opponents.
If this opener is any indication, Spearfish enters the season with confidence, chemistry, and a clear identity — one built on defense, unselfish play, and balanced scoring.
