The Spearfish Spartans Girls Tennis team opened their week on Monday, August 18, facing two of the Black Hills’ top programs at the Spearfish High School Tennis Courts. The Spartans fell in straight sets to Rapid City Stevens and Rapid City Christian by identical scores of 9-0, but Head Coach Alexis Codr said there were positives to take away from the home matches.
Competitive Moments Against Rapid City Christian
“Against RC Christian, we seemed to be more competitive,” Codr said. “They’re a really good team but our girls competed.”
The Spartans showed flashes of strong rallies and stayed engaged throughout the dual. Codr, stepping into her first season as head coach, highlighted that maintaining that level of competitiveness will be key as the team develops this fall.
Tough Test Versus Rapid City Stevens
The Spartans also went up against perennial powerhouse Rapid City Stevens. Despite the tough scoreline, Codr praised her players’ resilience.
“They’re a tough team. Our girls kept great attitudes and that’s really all you can ask,” she said.
Building for the Future
Codr, who served as an assistant coach for the last three seasons before taking over for longtime coach Susie Mondloch, said her focus now is on growth and fundamentals.
“Just looking at building our team and building just some of those skills,” Codr explained. “How do you play doubles, how do you play singles, what we want to accomplish and improving on that.”
What’s Next
The Spartans won’t have much time to dwell on Monday’s matches. They’ll hit the road this weekend, traveling east to compete in the Madison Girls Tennis Invitational on Friday and Saturday, August 22–23.
