SPEARFISH, S.D. — The Spearfish Spartans continued to build momentum Tuesday night, shutting out Belle Fourche 3-0 at the Black Hills Power Sports Complex.
Three different Spartans found the back of the net as Spearfish improved to 5-2-1 on the season with the victory.
Spearfish didn’t need long to break through.
With just under 27 minutes remaining in the first half, Evan Duncan opened the scoring to give the Spartans a 1-0 advantage.
Spearfish added to its lead less than nine minutes later. Caleb Verhulst set up Elijah Ruml, who found the back of the net with 18:04 remaining in the opening half to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
That advantage held as the Spartans kept Belle Fourche off the scoreboard.
Spearfish eventually put the finishing touches on the shutout when Jaxon Skvicalo scored with just over 6:30 remaining in the match, extending the lead to 3-0.
The victory marked another strong result for a Spearfish team that has now won five of its first eight matches this season. Just as importantly, the Spartans’ defense kept Belle Fourche off the board for the full 80 minutes.
Spearfish will now head back on the road for a matchup against Sioux Falls Christian at Sanford Crossing.
