SPEARFISH, S.D. — The Spearfish Spartans boys soccer team added another valuable weekend of experience to its season, welcoming Sioux Falls Washington and Sioux Falls Lincoln to the Black Hills Power Sports Complex.
Spearfish fell 4-0 to Washington before coming back with a more competitive performance against Lincoln in a 3-1 loss.
While the results didn’t fall in Spearfish’s favor, the two matches gave the Spartans an opportunity to compete against strong Class AA programs and continue building toward the heart of their schedule.
Spartans Respond Against Lincoln
After a difficult 4-0 result against Washington, Spearfish returned to the field looking to respond against Lincoln.
The Spartans were able to generate more offensively and eventually found the back of the net late in the match.
Evan Duncan converted a penalty kick with 11:18 remaining, scoring Spearfish’s lone goal in the 3-1 loss.
The goal provided a positive finish to a challenging weekend and continued a strong start to the season for Duncan, who has already found the back of the net multiple times for Spearfish.
More importantly, the Spartans continued battling and creating opportunities late against another quality opponent.
Early Success Gives Spartans Something to Build On
The two losses shouldn’t overshadow what Spearfish has already accomplished during the opening portion of the season.
The Spartans began the year with a 2-1 victory over Tea Area before battling Aberdeen Central to a 1-1 draw.
Spearfish then traveled across the state and put together one of its strongest performances of the season against Mitchell.
After a scoreless first half, the Spartans erupted offensively in the second half. Caleb Verhulst opened the scoring before Duncan added another goal. Ethan Croff converted a penalty kick to make it 3-0.
Mitchell responded with two late goals, but Jonah Gatz answered for Spearfish and helped put the game away in a 4-2 victory.
Those early performances showed the Spartans can create scoring opportunities, play through close matches and respond when an opponent builds momentum.
This weekend simply provided another challenge.
Quality Competition Provides an Early Measuring Stick
Facing Washington and Lincoln gave Spearfish an opportunity to see how it matches up against quality competition from across the state.
That’s valuable during the regular season.
The Spartans have already experienced one-goal games, a draw, multi-goal victories and now a weekend against two Sioux Falls programs.
Every one of those situations provides something different for Spearfish to learn from.
There is plenty of season remaining, and the Spartans have already shown they have the ability to put together strong stretches of soccer.
The focus now becomes using what they learned over the weekend and carrying it into their next opportunity.
Spearfish Heads to Pierre
The Spartans will get that opportunity when they travel to Pierre for their next matchup.
After opening the season with several encouraging performances and then being tested at home, the trip to Pierre gives Spearfish a chance to respond and begin building momentum again.
The Washington and Lincoln matches may not have produced the results the Spartans wanted, but early-season challenges can become valuable later.
Spearfish has already shown it can score, win on the road and battle through close matches.
Now the Spartans will look to put those pieces back together when they take the field in Pierre.
