SPEARFISH, S.D. — The Spearfish Spartans boys soccer team remained unbeaten Saturday, battling the Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles to a 1-1 draw in Spearfish.
Coming off a season-opening victory, the Spartans wasted little time putting pressure on the Golden Eagles. Evan Duncan found the back of the net approximately five minutes into the match, giving Spearfish an early 1-0 advantage.
Aberdeen Central responded later in the opening half. The Golden Eagles broke through with 18:33 remaining before halftime, evening the match at 1-1.
From there, the Spartans’ defense was tested, and sophomore goalkeeper Tristan Limbo answered the call. Limbo made several key saves throughout the match to keep Aberdeen Central off the scoreboard and give Spearfish opportunities to regain the lead.
Neither side was able to find the deciding goal, sending the Spartans to their first draw of the young season.
Spearfish now sits at 1-0-1 through its first two matches.
As the Spartans prepare for their first road trip of the season, head coach Anthony Bradley said connecting the team’s defense and midfield will be an important point of emphasis.
“That’s going to be our majority point of focus moving forward. We have a lot of talent on both ends and can be dangerous if we can get both working together,” Bradley said.
The Spartans will have two opportunities to put that focus into action next weekend. Spearfish travels to Mitchell on Friday, Aug. 21, before making the trip to Huron on Saturday, Aug. 22.
