SPEARFISH, S.D. — The Spearfish Spartans Boys Basketball team enters the new season with confidence, experience, and a clear goal: transform from a competitive program into a true Class AA contender. Coming off a 15–9 season and a seventh-place finish at last year’s state tournament, the Spartans return a strong core ready to build on the momentum they’ve steadily developed over the past three years.
Replacing a Key Leader
The biggest challenge will be filling the void left by the graduation of Dylon Doren, who led the Spartans with 10.7 points per game and served as a versatile defensive anchor.
“You don’t replace a player like Dylon,” said Head Coach Ben Schultz. “He could shoot, defend all five positions, and was a strong leader for the team. We can’t replace him, but we’re counting on key players to fill the things he could do.”
Experienced Core Returns
Despite the loss, Spearfish brings back multiple key contributors from last season’s state tournament squad. Seniors Bennett Kortan, Kamren Davis, Kade Vavruska, and Cooper Gibbs headline a veteran group that has matured together year after year.
Kamren Davis: 10.3 points per game | 206 total points
Bennett Kortan: 8.8 points per game | 175 total points
Kade Vavruska: 8.5 points per game
Mason Southern: Returning after a breakout season with increased minutes and production
“It’s been a three-year build up to get to this point, and I’m really proud of how they’re developing,” Schultz said.
With so many players capable of scoring, the Spartans believe their depth will be a strength—not a complication.
Identity Built on Pace and Patience
This year’s team will lean on a fast but disciplined offensive approach as they look to create high-quality scoring chances. Schultz emphasized that Spearfish’s versatility will only work if the ball continues to move at a high level.
“Our pace will be a major part of our identity in hunting for quality looks,” Schultz said. “When you have a team full of guys capable of scoring, sometimes the ball doesn’t move as much as you want. But I think our ball movement will become our identity.”
From Competing to Contending
With a seasoned core, improved depth, and a commitment to unselfish play, the Spartans believe the pieces are in place to take the next step. After years of building, this season offers a real opportunity for Spearfish to rise into the top tier of Class AA.
