SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Spearfish Spartans Boys Wrestling team enters the new season young, hungry, and noticeably more experienced than a year ago. With a roster stacked with developing athletes and two returning state qualifiers leading the charge, the Spartans are poised to take a meaningful step forward on the mat in 2025.
Returning for another postseason push are Jacob Foster, who qualified at 144 pounds, and Kadin Gonzales, who punched his ticket to the state tournament at 138. Both gained valuable experience under the bright lights and are expected to anchor the lineup while setting the tone in the practice room.
Head Coach John Thayer is confident that their leadership, combined with a maturing roster, gives the Spartans a strong foundation.
“We’re excited about what Jacob and Kadin bring back to the team, but we’re just as excited to see how our underclassmen step up and improve throughout the season,” Thayer said.
Growth Will Define the Season
While still a young squad, the Spartans are deeper, stronger, and more mat-ready than last winter. Many athletes who were thrown into varsity roles early now return with match experience, better technique, and a clearer understanding of what it takes to compete in one of South Dakota’s toughest sports.
The Spartans first match will take place at home on Thursday, December 4 against Sturgis Brown. Spearfish will then be on the road the next day to Sidney, Montana.
