The Spearfish Spartans Girls Soccer Team earned a commanding 7-1 victory over the Belle Fourche Broncs on Tuesday, September 9, improving their record to 4-3-1 on the season.
First-Half Grind
The opening half was tightly contested, with both defenses holding strong. Spearfish finally broke through when Ella Sillanpaa found the back of the net, giving the Spartans a slim 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Second-Half Surge
Coming out of the break, the Spartans wasted no time putting the game out of reach. Kate Scharf scored twice in quick succession to extend the lead to 3-0. Belle Fourche responded with a goal from Mikka Dunavant, but Spearfish answered back in overwhelming fashion.
Scharf netted two more goals, finishing the night with four total, while Cora Pierson added a pair of her own to round out the scoring. The Spartans’ offensive adjustments proved too much for the Broncs to handle.
Coaching Perspective
Head Coach Anthony Bradley credited tactical changes for the second-half explosion:
“We changed the formation and that stretched out and that opened up the field,” Bradley said. “We started putting in goals. Things were getting congested in there and we knew we had to make some changes.”
Looking Ahead
The Spartans now turn their focus to a home matchup against Sioux Falls Christian (3-3) on Friday, September 12. Kickoff for the girls game is set for 4 p.m.
Bradley knows his team will need to put together a complete performance:
“We need to start how we did against Pierre and finish how we did against Belle Fourche. They’re a good team but ultimately we just need to start fast and play hard.”
