The Spearfish Spartans Girls Volleyball team is back in the gym, kicking off practices after last week’s tryouts. The Spartans are coming off a 23-10 season that ended in the Class AA SoDak 16, where they fell to Aberdeen Central.

Transition After Senior Leadership

This year’s roster will look different without seniors Avery Kirk and Brooklyn Yackley, who provided steady leadership last season. Despite those losses, Head Coach Shelbie Richards said the team is already setting a strong foundation for the season ahead.

Setting High Standards

“We talked a lot just in the last few days that we have set a really high tone for ourselves and expectations, so that’s where we have to start and grow from there,” Richards said.

The program has continued to raise its bar in recent years, and Richards noted that the focus remains on making a push to the Class AA state tournament.

Season Opener Ahead

The Spartans won’t have to wait long to test themselves. They’ll begin their season on the road at the Huron Volleyball Invitational, where they’ll face a mix of tough competition to kick off their 2025 campaign.
